Parents' Association Coffee Morning series - Natural Makeup Class

The TIS Parents' Association Coffee Morning Natural Makeup class kickstarted with an interesting little spread of petit dejeuner and the wonderful aroma of coffee. What was the occasion? Just mums coming together for a common purpose - How to look beautiful...with the aid of natural looking makeup. For some, it was an opportunity to meet other parents and foster a closer-knit Tenby community, which is really what parents' coffee mornings are all about!

Tummies satiated, and ice-breaking out of the way, the class got off to a good start. Ms Ana Cheong is an Image and Personal Branding Coach and Consultant, and has comprehensive experience in cosmetology and fashion. Together with Ms Sharon Chew, who conducts professional makeup courses and often works in collaboration with magazines for engagements in makeovers and product launches, they shared some lighthearted banter on the do's and don'ts of natural makeup. Hands all cleaned, ladies? Now, whip out those mirrors and be prepared for an image transformation!

It is important to be aware of your skin colour tone so you can look good with the correct play of colours. Ana showed us the colour chart wheel and shared some pointers on basic colour pairings. Generally classified into two categories of colour spectrums - warm or cool skin tones, Ana asked a simple question of how our skin reacts to sun exposure to determine our skin tone. Those who tan, fall into the warm skin tone category; while those who sunburn easily (like me!) are classified under cool skin tones. With this knowledge, we can get technical and make smart decisions on the best choice of colours for eyeshadows, blushers and lipsticks. It's all about looking good, ladies...SERIOUSLY!

Many ladies came sans makeup. At the end of the session, there was a noticeable transformation indeed. Learning is an active process. We learn by doing. And what we learn with pleasure, we never forget!

What an evening!

Parents from all sections of the school body, teachers from TIS and SST, representatives from different departments and all levels of the school body: all together as one, under one roof, for the same single purpose.  

The photos are testament to an incredible evening. The ballroom was overflowing with beautiful people.  The atmosphere was carefree and bright.  The music was simply superb coming from David Spencer and Jazzmine’s Aria (a huge hand for David, Shen, Eugene, Charlotte and our very own TIS Campus Principal, Andrew Auster who between them bewitched and impressed all of us with their talent on the keyboard, trombone, saxophone and vocals); and later from The Fugitives, our live band (thank you DBT, Gavin, Stuart, Nic and Paul) who made sure none of us sat still for long after dinner.  Who knew we could shift our bodies like that on the dance floor?

Seth, Hassan and Peter of TriKnight Creative did a marvelous job with the photo booth in the foyer. We say ‘photo booth’ but in reality, it was more of a professional studio with some serious expertise (and a seriously long queue).  Seth, with extraordinary patience and good humour, took excellent photos for guests to take home as mementos. Amidst all this cheer and entertainment was a reminder of what brought us all together for the evening: a simple and beautiful presentation on the charities we support played on the TV screens in the foyer.  With simplicity and weight, it showed which charities the students had chosen and why.  See it here ...

The evening inside the ballroom began with a bang at 7.30pm.  The James Bond theme music struck up; the lights went down; the spotlight searched the room.  It stopped.  The spotlight shone stock still at the circle of the Bond Tenby With Love backdrop specially constructed for this purpose (thank you Venu of Ace Fame).  As the music reached its climatic end, Deputy Head Pastoral, Tom Robinson stepped through the backdrop into the spotlight.  Confetti flew.  The evening proper had begun.

Tom who was our MC for the evening did a fabulous job entertaining everyone and keeping all guests on their toes, clapping and cheering, throughout the lucky draw, Bond quiz and the auction.  One has to wonder where he hides that Duracell battery pack of his.

Person after person came up in a seemingly endless stream to collect their prizes: a handphone, a coffee machine, air tickets to Langkawi and Ho Chi Minh, three hotel stays in Phuket, F&B vouchers, gym membership, a waveboard, balance bike, golf lessons, osteopath sessions, beautiful household items, a bottle of Prosecco, a voucher for handmade shoes…the list went on…

Then came the auction. We raised a whopping RM 21,600 to add onto funds raised for charity: 

• An amazing RM 7,000 for the butler services of TIS Campus Principal, Andrew Auster and Deputy Head Pastoral Tom Robinson;
• RM 1,600 for the party services of Messrs Kenny and Adam;
• RM 2,300 for lessons with pro golfer Siew Ai Lim;
• RM 600 for a JD Bug scooter; and 
• An incredible RM 10,000 for the autographed photo of Sean Connery, who many consider the best Bond.

Thank you all who participated!  Hope you had as much fun as we did, watching and cheering as the bid climbed and then peaked above and beyond all expectations.

Total Fund Raised from this event :

1. Cash Raised = RM 59,650.00 

(final figures pending final account closing from school's Finance Dept)

• RM 13,250 from Advertisements in Souvenir Booket;
• RM 10,300 of Cash Donation;
• RM 7,500 from sales of Raffle tickets;  
• RM 21,600 from Auction;
• About RM 7,000 from balance of Charity Ball tickets sales (after deducting F&B expenses; photographer and Photo Booth services - which was partially subsided by a group of parents; printing of Souvenir Booklets; stage Backdrop design and printing)

2. Donations in kind Raised = about RM 49,248.00

(This includes all sponsored items/services such as all gifts, design & printing of 'marketing' materials, lighting & sound sound system, Bond video, alcohol (beers, cocktails, wine).

It is imperative to note that without such donations in kind and sponsorships, we could not have raised the cash value as stated above.

KLISS PRIMARY SWIM MEET 2014

Come Saturday, 22 November 2014, Tenby International School Setia Eco Park will once again host the KLISS Primary Swim Meet.
Come lend your support and cheer the young swimmers onto victory! 





Food and refreshments (TIS Parents' Association initiated) will be on sale outside the MPH, just a short walk across from the swimming pool.





This year, we have Sid's grilled-on-site Hot Dogs and
Gourmet Cheese Burgers.
Sounds yummy just thinking about it!

How about fresh gourmet coffee from barista-on-wheels ROYAL POST?

KL's first mobile cafe will be in the school grounds to take care of your early morning caffeine fix! Track down the truck...you can't miss it!

And let's not forget the lovely parents who have generously volunteered to bake some delicious cakes and treats for sale. Home-baked with love & goodness...can't get any better than that!

INTERNATIONAL BOOK WEEK - THE POWER OF STORYTELLING

Last Tuesday, the students at TIS Primary were treated to some storytelling fun in conjunction with International Book Week. Themed, "Stories from Around The World," parents' association volunteers Eugene Kok and Grant Colbron kept the children enthralled and entertained with stories and activities.

enchanting the children with their tales from around the world.

People of all ages, particularly children have an innate love of storytelling. There are many benefits to having storytellers engage with children. Storytelling helps develop and enhances listening skills. Stories cultivate imagination, creativity and teach character. Stories can foster the desire to read independently. Research has shown that children can listen on a higher language level than they can read. Stories make complex ideas more accessible and exposes children to increased verbal proficiency.

I truly believe the world of tomorrow belongs to innovators and storytellers. Storytelling moves people! Stories can link not only the classroom and home, but also between the classroom and beyond. Is it no wonder then, that schools revel in the power of storytelling...?!

Photo Festival - Friday 20th June, 2014

IGCSE ART & DESIGN FINAL EXHIBITION..."Our Parting Gift"

Yesterday was the opening night of Year 11's IGCSE Art & Design Final Exhibition, themed "Our Parting Gift". With ambient lighting and soft music playing in the background; and students, parents and teachers dressed in their formal attire, it was a night to pay tribute to the amazing pool of talented students and TIS Head of Art & Design, Ms Gemma Pearce. Truly works of art, these students have outshone themselves in showcasing their excellent masterpieces.

The exhibition is open to the public and will be on till 27 June 2014, from 9am -11am (weekdays) & 9am -12pm (Saturdays), at the Exhibition & Performance Centre (EPC). Do make time to visit the exhibition, you will be amazed by the fine artwork as I was...

TIS Parents Association @ Tenby Spring Charity Carnival 2014

Congratulation to the senior student leadership team for the job well done to have successfully organised the Spring Charity Carnival 2014 on 5th April.

TIS PA has collected a total of RM3,416.70 to be contributed to the overall fund towards the 4 chosen charity organisations namely, WWF, UNICEF, The SUKA Society and Furry Friends Farm.

Breakdown as follows:

1. Cash donation from parents - RM1,451

credit to : Sheena, Huie Yee, Elaine, Fee Lin, Miranda, Belinda, Mrs Yau, Jane, Joanne and Amelia [RM500 from Amelia for the special entertainment from our duo Eugene and Grant ;) ]

2. Total sales from Parents Lunch Club : Fashion Accessories - RM820

credit to: Cass, Fee Lin, Suk Kian, Mrs Yau, Belinda and Joanne 

3. Total sales from home baked cakes of various mums - RM387.70

credit to: Shelley Jones, Casey Chua, Kiren and Shreen

4. 50% of Sweeg Gallery's sales - RM758
